Empowering Your Journey: A Birthing Partner's Guide to Supporting Mama

Discover how to be the ultimate birthing partner! Learn valuable insights and techniques to support mama during labor and beyond.

Hey there, amazing partner! Welcome to this space of love, support, and empowerment. As a San Diego North County Doula, I'm here to share some heartfelt insights with you, because your role as mama's birthing partner in this journey is truly invaluable. So, let's dive in and explore how you can be the ultimate rock for mama during this incredible journey into motherhood.

The Power of Presence

First things first, let's talk about the magic of simply being there. Your steady presence is a beacon of comfort, providing mama with the strength and reassurance she needs. Your unwavering support creates a safe space for her to embrace the beautiful chaos of childbirth. So, ditch the distractions and be fully present in each moment, soaking in the raw beauty of this experience together. Put away the phone, resist the urge to check emails or social media, and refrain from turning on the TV. Instead, focus on mama and the miracle unfolding before your eyes.

Honoring Your Role

I want you to know something important: your role is irreplaceable! Doulas don't diminish your support; instead, we enhance it. We're here to complement your love and care, offering guidance and encouragement every step of the way. And on that day when mama is laboring, the doula is there for you as well. Having a trained professional doula allows you to take breaks, refuel, or even take a nap without feeling guilty about leaving your partner alone. So, embrace your role with pride and know that you are making a world of difference in mama's journey.

Preparation for the Journey

Before the big day arrives, doulas offer invaluable support to both you and mama. Through personalized one-hour sessions, we'll walk you through mock labor scenarios, helping you understand what to expect and how to support mama every step of the way. From breathing techniques to massage methods, we'll equip you with the tools and knowledge you need to be mama's rock during labor. And beyond the birthing process, we'll discuss practical ways to support mama during pregnancy and postpartum, from keeping her hydrated and nourished to tidying up the house so she can focus on rest and relaxation. Together, we'll ensure that you feel confident, prepared, and empowered to be the best partner you can be on this incredible journey into parenthood. It's important to note that not every doula offers these services, but I believe in going above and beyond for my clients, especially when parents are on the same wavelength. If you're interested in this level of support, don't hesitate to ask or request it from your doula.

Nurturing Mama

Nobody knows your partner better than you do, so start by gauging how you're going to support her that day through personalization. Ask her and be flexible, as some mamas may want lots of love and affection, while others may prefer a more hands-off approach. One of the most precious gifts you can offer mama is your nurturing touch. Whether it's a gentle massage, a supportive touch, or simply holding her hand, your touch speaks volumes of your love and support. Remember to keep her hydrated, nourished, and comfortable, tending to her needs with tenderness and care. Additionally, consider using acupressure techniques to help alleviate discomfort and promote relaxation during labor. See more on our blog on holistic approaches to labor under “more holistic approaches to pregnancy” to read more on acupressure.

Empowering Communication

Communication is key, especially during early labor. Talk to mama, listen to her needs, and reassure her with words of love and affirmation. And remember, don't take anything personally. In the intensity of labor, emotions may run high, but it's all part of the journey. Stay grounded, stay supportive, and witness the beauty of the moment as it unfolds.

Early labor communication is key, but when things start picking up and intensity is here, that's when your intuitive presence becomes paramount. Instead of asking mama alot of questions, simply attune to her needs and offer support without words, whether it's a comforting touch, a cool drink of water, or a reassuring glance. Trust your instincts, stay grounded, and be her steady anchor as she navigates the waves of labor. It's these little acts of thoughtfulness that can make all the difference in her journey.

Embracing Your Yin

Regardless of gender, we all have Yin (feminine) and Yang(masculine) energies within us. Embrace your Yin side during labor, tapping into your nurturing instincts and intuitive wisdom. Your gentle presence and loving care are like balm to mama's soul, creating an atmosphere of trust and serenity.

Preparing Together

Lastly, let's talk about preparation. Attend birthing classes together, engage in holistic practices, and familiarize yourself with techniques to support mama during labor. And don't hesitate to reach out to your doula for guidance and support along the way. We absolutely love an involved and engaged partner and working with the family as a whole; that is our bread and butter. Personally, I am not just there to be hired for mom; I am ultimately there for the whole family. I'm in service of mother, but I'm there for the entire family's well-being and support throughout this beautiful journey!

Your love and support are the pillars of strength that mama leans on during this incredible journey. Discover how a miscarriage doula provides comfort and support during pregnancy loss. Online resources available for those in need.

Navigating the tender journey of pregnancy, I've borne witness to the poignant mix of joy and sorrow firsthand. As a Miscarriage Doula in San Diego North County, my heart resonates deeply with those encountering the pain of loss and grief. It's a reality I've encountered while providing solace to those mourning the loss of a pregnancy.

Acknowledging feelings of guilt and shame is common in this journey of grief, but it's important to understand that you're not alone in experiencing them. Grief is a long and intricate process that cannot be rushed, and at times, it may feel isolating. However, among the sorrow, there are compassionate hearts ready to support you every step of the way.

Whether you're experiencing a natural spontaneous miscarriage or facing the complexities of a difficult decision to end a pregnancy, my arms are here to hold you close. As a doula who understands the weight of loss, I'm here to offer unwavering support and compassion, especially if you've endured the heartache of multiple miscarriages. Your journey is valid and deserving of care and understanding; let me walk beside you, offering solace and comfort through every step.

Breaking the Taboo: Addressing the Commonality of Miscarriages

Miscarriages are far more common than many realize, yet it remains a taboo topic in today's society. Families and friends often avoid discussing miscarriage openly,  this may be due to the fact that they don’t want to say the wrong thing. Keeping the weight of a loss all to yourself may lead to, pain, hurt, and suppression of negative feelings. This lack of open dialogue can have a profound impact on your holistic emotional and spiritual health, not just in the present but also down the line. Many women admit to feeling guilt and shame, blaming themselves for the miscarriage and scrutinizing every detail of their behavior during pregnancy. It's important to remember: Nothing you did caused this loss.

Why Relieve Emotions and Revisit the Story?

You might be grappling with the significance of delving into these emotions or revisiting the raw narrative of your miscarriage. What's the purpose? How can opening up again possibly provide solace? A doula is here to tenderly guide you through these doubts and heartaches, offering unwavering compassion and empathy. It's vital to acknowledge the prevalence of miscarriages and the societal norms that often compel women to keep their pregnancies hidden, especially if they've endured miscarriages or fertility struggles previously. This pervasive sense of isolation can intensify the profound feelings of longing following a miscarriage. Together, let's navigate this delicate terrain, providing each other with a sanctuary of understanding and support as we honor the depths of your experience.

The Role of a Miscarriage Doula: Providing Compassionate Support

Through gentle presence and empathetic understanding, I offer unwavering support as you navigate this painful journey.

When a miscarriage occurs, both partners go through a grieving process, but their experiences may differ significantly. It's a lonely and isolating time to grieve the loss of a pregnancy, feeling like you're doing it alone. Suppressing these emotions only prolongs the healing process. Seeking support from a therapist, support groups, or a doula who is trauma informed can help you process your emotions, feel supported, heard, and nurtured as you navigate the path toward healing and growth from this devastating experience.

Women holding hands grieving

Have you ever noticed the synchronicity in the world around us? From the four seasons to the four main phases of the moon cycle, it seems there's a pattern of four everywhere we look. Many believe it's not a coincidence but rather a reflection of our deep connection with nature. Just as Mother Nature cycles through seasons, so do women through their menstrual cycles, embodying the four main feminine archetypes. It's a beautiful reminder of our innate ability as women to create and nurture life, mirroring the cycles of nature. In this spirit, let's honor this interconnectedness by paying tribute to the four main types of mamas I have the privilege of supporting.

Honoring the Four Phases

As we journey through the four weeks of this month, the four seasons of the year, and the four phases of the moon, let's also honor the four phases of a woman's cycle and the four main feminine archetypes. Each phase, whether it's menstruation, follicular, ovulation, or luteal, brings its own unique gifts and challenges to motherhood. During menstruation, we're invited to turn inward, rest, and nurture ourselves, preparing for the energetic surge of the follicular phase, where creativity and new beginnings abound. Ovulation, the peak of our cycle, is a time of heightened energy and fertility, where we may feel more outgoing and expressive. And during the luteal phase, we're called to slow down, reflect, and honor the wisdom gained throughout our cycle.

Seasons of Motherhood: Finding Wisdom in Nature's Cycle

Similarly, each season of the year offers its own lessons and blessings for mothers. Spring, with its energy of renewal and growth, mirrors the fertile energy of the follicular phase, while summer radiates with the warmth and abundance of ovulation. Autumn invites us to release what no longer serves us, much like the shedding of the uterine lining during menstruation, and winter beckons us to turn inward, rest, and replenish our reserves.

Exploring Feminine Archetypes

As for the four main feminine archetypes— the Maiden, the Mother, the Enchantress, and the Wise Woman (also known as Crone) —each archetype embodies different aspects of womanhood and motherhood. The Maiden represents youth, innocence, and the blossoming of potential, while the Mother embodies nurturing, caregiving, and unconditional love. The Enchantress symbolizes intuition, creativity, and the magic of feminine energy, while the Wise Woman embodies wisdom, inner knowing, and the power of transformation.

Celebrating the Diversity of Motherhood Journeys

And let's not forget the four types of mamas—those on a fertility journey, expecting their first child, navigating the joys and challenges of motherhood, and grieving the loss of a child. Each type brings its own unique experiences, emotions, and lessons to the journey of motherhood, enriching the tapestry of our collective experience.

Mom playing with her kids in a field of grass

So, as we celebrate Mother's Day and honor the incredible diversity of mamas in our community, let's also embrace the richness of our menstrual cycles, the wisdom of the seasons, the magic of feminine archetypes, and the beauty of each motherhood journey. You are unstoppable, dear mama, in every phase, season, archetype, and experience. Embrace it all, for it is what makes you truly magnificent!

Holistic Labor and Delivery: Your Guide to a Beautiful Birth

Unlock the benefits of holistic labor and delivery with your San Diego County Doula. Harness the power of body, mind & spirit for a transformative birth experience.

As a seasoned San Diego County Doula, I'm here to guide you through this transformative experience with love, support, and a whole lot of empowering knowledge. Did you know that holistic approaches to labor and delivery have been shown to reduce the need for medical interventions, such as epidurals and cesarean sections? In this blog, we're going to dive deep into the world of holistic practices for labor and delivery, exploring how you can harness the power of your body, mind, and spirit to bring your baby into the world with grace and confidence.

Setting the Scene

First things first, let's talk about creating the perfect ambiance for your big day. We're talking soft lights, chill tunes, and maybe even a hint of lavender in the air. As your trusted doula, I believe in the power of creating a sacred space for your labor and delivery. This space becomes your sanctuary—a haven of peace and serenity where you can tap into your inner strength and welcome your baby into the world with grace and ease.

Breathing Through It

Now, let's chat about the power of your breath. Your breath is your anchor, guide, and source of strength as you navigate the waves of labor. Through mindful breathing techniques, we'll journey together into the depths of your being, harnessing the power of your breath to find calmness and serenity amidst the intensity of childbirth.

Pregnant women in a gray set breathing on a yoga mat

Here are some breathing techniques we can explore together: slow breathing, patterned breathing, paced breathing, visualization breathing, Lamaze breathing, and more. Each technique offers its unique benefits, helping you stay centered, focused, and in control during labor. For more detailed information on these techniques, check out our blog "How a Holistic Approach to Pregnancy Influences Positive Birth Experiences”. Together, we'll find the perfect breathing technique that resonates with you and helps you feel empowered during your birthing journey.

Movement and Taylored Positioning

Your body is a temple of divine wisdom, capable of moving and flowing in perfect harmony with the rhythm of labor. Holistic labor is all about embracing your body's natural instincts, so feel free to get creative with your movements. Whether you're pacing the room, bouncing on a birthing ball, or busting out some yoga poses, just do what feels good, mama. Each movement brings you one step closer to meeting your precious little one!

Pregnant woman resting head on a yoga ball during labor

As we journey through the different phases of labor – early labor, active labor, the transition phase, and pushing phase – we'll explore a variety of positions taylored to support you at each stage. From gentle walking to encourage relaxation in early labor to more active positions like squatting or hands-and-knees for the pushing phase, we'll find the perfect positions to optimize your comfort, progress, and connection with your baby. Remember, mama, your body knows what it needs, so trust your instincts, and let's find the positions that feel just right for you. See more on our blog for different taylored positions, "How a Holistic Approach to Pregnancy Influences Positive Birth Experiences” and the National Library of Medicines website as well as Cochran Library.

Nourishment and Hydration

As you embark on this sacred journey of childbirth, it's essential to nourish your body from within, replenishing your energy and vitality with every sip and bite. Hydration is key, mama—sip on herbal teas, coconut water, and electrolyte-rich drinks to keep your body hydrated and balanced throughout labor. And don't forget to nibble on nourishing snacks like fresh fruits, nuts, and whole grains to fuel your strength and endurance.

Holistic Pain Management

Let's be real—labor can be intense. But guess what? You've got this! So, let's talk about some holistic pain management techniques to help you ride those waves of labor and delivery like a pro. From massage and aromatherapy to acupressure and hydrotherapy, there are tons of natural remedies out there to help take the edge off. Additionally, have you heard about the birthing comb? It's a handy tool you can hold in your hand and apply pressure with during an intense surge or contraction. This technique aligns with the gate control theory of pain, helping to lessen the intensity of contractions. Check out this blog for more on birthing combs.

Another non-medical option worth exploring is the TENS machine, which can help modulate the sensation of labor discomfort, providing relief in a gentle and natural way. See more on NIH’s website for more info! Let's explore these options together and find what works best for you!

Sacred Bonding

As your little one makes their grand entrance into the world, let's honor the sacred bond between mother and baby with gentle, loving touch, and skin-to-skin contact. Did you know that the very first hour after birth is often referred to as the “Golden Hour”? It's this magical window of time when mama and baby have the opportunity to bond in the most profound way. During this precious hour, mama's body releases a surge of oxytocin, the love hormone, fostering feelings of warmth and connection between mother and baby. It's also the perfect time for baby to latch and breastfeed, as they're more alert and receptive. Skin-to-skin contact during the Golden Hour offers a myriad of benefits for babies, including improved thermoregulation, stabilized respiratory rate, and enhanced bonding with their mother. This sacred time sets the stage for a strong and nurturing relationship between mama and baby, laying the foundation for a lifetime of love and connection. Read more on BSA’s blog on The Importance of the Golden Hour After Birth.

In those precious moments of intimacy and connection, let the love between you and your baby flow freely, weaving a tapestry of love that will last a lifetime.

You do not need to handle all of this emotional burden on your own! Let me be your guiding light, your unwavering support, and your fierce advocate as you embark on your fertility journey.

Let's talk about six nonmedical tips to help guide and support your fertility journey:

6 Non-Medical Tips to Guide and Support Your Fertility Journey

1. Switch Household Products/Self-Care Products to Non-Toxic: Start by downloading the EWG Healthy Living app to check the toxicity levels of your household and self-care products. Creating a non-toxic environment can support your overall health and fertility.

2. Focus on Nutrition: Your body is a sacred vessel, capable of nurturing new life within. Embrace a healthy diet rich in whole foods, and don't forget to take your prenatal vitamins.

Opt for a prenatal with methyl-folate instead of folic acid, especially if you have a common gene mutation called "MHTFR mutation." Jordan Dewhurst FNP-C informs us, "Women with a common gene mutation called “MHTFR mutation” aren’t able to metabolize the form of folic acid put in most prenatal vitamins and folic acid that is found in the foods we eat. Without this essential nutrient being able to reach a developing baby, it puts them at higher risk for birth defects and miscarriage. Taking a prenatal with a form of folate called “methyl-folate” ensures that women with this gene mutation can give their baby adequate amounts of the folate nutrient- essential for spinal and brain development”. Read more on this blog on how to nourish your fertility.

3. Destress: High cortisol levels can negatively impact hormonal health and fertility. Incorporate holistic practices like meditation, yoga, or journaling to reduce stress and cultivate inner peace! Check out this blog on how to navigate the Emotional Rollercoaster of Infertility.

4. Acupuncture: Consider adding acupuncture to your fertility toolkit! This ancient practice can help balance your body's energy flow and support reproductive health.

5. Online Resources: Dive into online resources and communities that are dedicated to guide and support your fertility journey. Surround yourself with knowledge, encouragement, and like-minded individuals who understand your journey. Here are a couple to start with,

6. Fertility Doula: Embarking on a fertility journey can feel overwhelming, with numerous appointments, confusing medical jargon, and emotional highs and lows. That's where a fertility doula steps in, offering unwavering support and guidance every step of the way.

Exploring Holistic Approaches to Postpartum Care

Grounding Yourself Every Morning

This simple act first thing in the morning sets the tone for a day filled with peace, intention, and connection to the natural rhythms of life! Scientific research has shown that grounding, also known as earthing, can reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and promote overall well-being.

Soaking Up the Healing Sunlight

Did you know that sunlight exposure triggers the production of vitamin D in your body, which is essential for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation? Vitamin D plays a crucial role in supporting your body's recovery during the postpartum period, aiding in healing and replenishing. So, don't hesitate to bask in the sunshine, mama!

Chiropractic Care

In addition to nutrition and sunlight, holistic postpartum care encompasses a range of practices that support your physical and emotional well-being! Chiropractic care, for example, can be incredibly beneficial for both you and your baby. Dr. Katie Sakamoto, perinatal and pediatric chiropractor, mentions that chiropractic care can benefit both you and baby after labor. Gentle adjustments can help stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which will enable rest and relaxation. Along with a healthy nervous system, chiropractic can help with digestive issues, ear infections, gas and overall tension in babies. Not only can chiropractic adjustments help realign your spine and pelvis after childbirth, but they can also address common issues like back pain and pelvic misalignment. Plus, by ensuring proper alignment, chiropractic care can support your baby's development and well-being as they navigate their journey through the birth canal.

Lactation Consultant

Another valuable resource during the postpartum period is a lactation consultant. These knowledgeable professionals can provide invaluable support and guidance as you navigate the joys and challenges of breastfeeding. From latching issues to milk supply concerns, a lactation consultant can offer practical advice and emotional support to help you and your baby thrive.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic floor therapy is another essential component of holistic postpartum care. Childbirth can place significant strain on the pelvic floor muscles, leading to issues like urinary incontinence and pelvic pain. Pelvic floor therapy focuses on strengthening and rehabilitating these muscles, promoting optimal pelvic health and function. See more on pelvic floor physical therapy on Holland Hospitals website

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is yet another holistic modality that can offer profound benefits during the postpartum period. This gentle, hands-on therapy focuses on releasing tension and promoting balance within the craniosacral system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and surrounding membranes. By facilitating the body's natural healing processes, craniosacral therapy can help alleviate postpartum discomfort and promote overall well-being.

Additionally, craniosacral therapy has been found to be effective in easing colic in babies. Through gentle manipulation and release of tension in the craniosacral system, this therapy can provide relief for infants suffering from colic symptoms, offering comfort to both baby and parent during this challenging time. Somatic Experiencing Healing

Last but not least, somatic experiencing healing offers a unique approach to postpartum care that focuses on releasing stored trauma and tension from the body. By gently guiding you through exercises and techniques that reconnect you with your body's innate wisdom, somatic experiencing healing can help you process and integrate the physical and emotional experiences of childbirth, leading to profound healing and transformation!

Acupuncture: Restoring Balance and Vitality

In the realm of holistic postpartum care, acupuncture shines as a powerful ally for women in various stages of their journey to motherhood. This ancient healing practice, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, has been praised for its ability to promote hormonal balance, support fertility, and enhance overall well-being.

Acupuncture holds the potential to address a wide range of concerns faced by women during their reproductive journey. In the realm of postpartum care, acupuncture provides valuable support for women as they navigate the challenges of the fourth trimester. By promoting hormonal balance, enhancing energy levels, and addressing postpartum symptoms such as fatigue and mood swings, acupuncture facilitates a smoother transition into motherhood. Additionally, acupuncture can aid in lactation support, optimizing milk production, and addressing breastfeeding challenges.

As with any holistic modality, it's essential to consult with a qualified and experienced acupuncturist who specializes in women's health and fertility. By incorporating acupuncture into your postpartum care routine, you can harness its profound benefits to support your journey to motherhood and nurture your body and soul with gentle, time-tested wisdom.

Nourishing Your Body with Love and Abundance

In addition to these nurturing practices, it's essential to embrace Kimberly Johnson’s insights from her book, "The Fourth Trimester" Johnson highlights five universal requirements for postpartum healing:

  1. Extended rest

  2. Nourishing food

  3. Loving touch

  4. Presence of wise women/spiritual companionship

  5. Contact with nature

Incorporating these elements into your postpartum care routine can profoundly support your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Extended rest allows your body to recover from childbirth and adjust to the demands of motherhood.

Nourishing food provides essential nutrients for healing and replenishment.During the postpartum period, it's more important than ever to nourish your body with love and abundance. Hydrate yourself generously, especially if you're breastfeeding, and indulge in warm, nourishing foods that soothe your soul and replenish your energy. Consider exploring different postpartum nutrition options, such as Ayurvedic recipes or recipes from trusted recipe books that focus on warm, nourishing foods recommended for new mothers. These recipes often include ingredients like bone broth, soups, stews, and herbal teas, which provide essential nutrients and support healing and recovery.

As well as, prepping freezer meals and nourishing broths in advance, ensuring that you have plenty of wholesome options readily available during this tender time of healing and transition. Check out Mamas Meals for postpartum meal delivery services, as they strive to provide food that does exactly this—nourishing your body and soul during the delicate postpartum period!

Furthermore, loving touch fosters connection and emotional support during this tender time. Mama’s consider this: if physical touch wasn't your forte in the past, now may be the perfect opportunity to reconsider. Embracing physical touch can release oxytocin and other feel-good hormones, offering you a sense of comfort and relaxation during this specific phase of your journey. Now is the time to allow yourself to be nurtured, stepping back from constantly caring for others and allowing yourself to be cared for.

The presence of wise women or spiritual companionship offers guidance and wisdom as you navigate the challenges of new motherhood, recognizing that this transition impacts not just your physical well-being but also your mind, body, and spirit. Especially during the postpartum period, where everything is in a newborn phase and feels entirely new, leaning into your tribe and surrounding yourself with these wise women—whether they're your family, friends, or San Diego Doula—can provide invaluable support and insight.

Finally, contact with nature reconnects you with the healing power of the natural world, offering solace and renewal amidst the joys and uncertainties of postpartum life. Basking in the healing sunlight and grounding yourself are two wonderful and easy ways to connect with nature during the postpartum period, providing you with essential nourishment for both body and soul.

Seeking Support and Guidance from Your Tribe

Remember, mama, you don't have to walk this path alone. Whether you're craving emotional support, lactation guidance, or holistic healing modalities, there's a tribe of support waiting to uplift and empower you every step of the way. Even if you have plenty of hands and support in your household, seeking guidance from a virtual doula can be incredibly beneficial. Don't let shame or guilt hold you back—embrace the opportunity to share your story and find someone who can offer non-judgmental support and guidance. Whether you're navigating breastfeeding challenges, coping with postpartum emotions, or simply seeking a listening ear, a virtual doula can provide invaluable assistance and help you feel empowered on your journey to motherhood.

Embracing the Art of Rest and Restoration

In a world that glorifies busyness and productivity, it's essential to surrender to the restorative power of rest. Allow yourself the grace to slow down, surrender to this season of transformation, and prioritize your own well-being. In some cultures, mom stays in bed for the first 40 days this is called the la cuarentena, but if that sounds like impossible to you- one rule of thumb is 5 days in bed, 5 days on the bed, and 5 days around the bed. That is the first 15 days of postpartum; dedicating yourself and life to resting after this huge transformative labor and journey you're on.

Tina Ghahramani-Singh L.Ac. on Gigi Vincents podcast episode 056 beautifully encapsulates the essence of the postpartum period, stating, “Postpartum is one of the three golden opportunities in Chinese medicine, where we can build our blood, rejuvenate, and extend our longevity, and vitality”. This sentiment underscores the importance of honoring this sacred time for rest and rejuvenation. In a world that glorifies busyness and productivity, it's essential to surrender to the restorative power of rest. Allow yourself the grace to slow down, to surrender to this season of transformation, and to prioritize your own well-being.

Remember, rest is not laziness—it's an essential component of self-care and healing. So, snuggle up with a cozy blanket, surrender to the gentle rhythm of your breath, and let yourself be held in the loving embrace of rest!

How a Holistic Approach to Pregnancy Influences Positive Birth Experiences

Embrace a holistic approach to pregnancy & birth. From mantras to doula support, empower your journey with love & intention!

Let's talk about the magic of a holistic approach to pregnancy and birth as well as how holistic practices influence positive birth experiences. This journey you're on—it's not just about the physical changes happening in your body. It's about the mental and emotional transformation, the deep connection with your baby, and the incredible power you hold within!

Pregnant woman meditating

From the moment you see those two lines on the pregnancy test, it's a wild ride of emotions. Excitement, fear, joy, uncertainty—it's all part of the journey. But here's the thing: you're not alone. You have a tribe of women who have walked this path before you, and we're here to support you every step of the way!

Let's start with the power of mantras. These simple words hold so much weight! Your mindset sets the tone for everything, from those early days of pregnancy to the sacred moment you meet your baby for the first time. That's why we're all about using mantras to keep you feeling strong, empowered, and aligned with your divine purpose.

They align you with your inner strength and help you feel grounded and empowered. Whether it's a verse from the Bible or a personal affirmation, find what resonates with your soul and let it guide you through the ups and downs of pregnancy. You can even print them out and scatter them around your birthing space, reminding you of your inner strength and the power of your body!

Evidence-Backed Techniques: Enhancing Your Birth Experience with Science

Diving deeper into the scientific realm, let's explore evidence-backed techniques that enrich your birthing experience:

Breathing Techniques

The rhythmic inhales and exhales not only center you but also oxygenate your body, aiding in relaxation and pain management during labor!

Pregnant woman doing breathing techniques during her pregnancy
  • Slow Breathing: Taking slow, deep breaths can help manage pain and reduce stress during labor. Studies have shown that slow breathing techniques can lead to lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and increased feelings of relaxation and calmness.

  • Patterned Breathing: This involves establishing a rhythmic pattern of breathing, such as inhaling for a certain count and exhaling for a longer count. Research suggests that patterned breathing can help distract from pain sensations and improve overall coping during labor!

  • Paced Breathing: Paced breathing involves breathing at a controlled rate, often synchronized with contractions. Studies have found that paced breathing can help reduce the perception of pain and improve maternal comfort during labor.

  • Visualization Breathing: This technique involves using mental imagery while breathing to create a sense of relaxation and focus. Research has shown that visualization techniques can help decrease anxiety and increase feelings of control during labor.

  • Lamaze Breathing: Lamaze breathing techniques involve various patterns of breathing, such as slow breathing, patterned breathing, and paced breathing. Studies have demonstrated that Lamaze breathing can effectively reduce pain and improve maternal satisfaction during labor.

  • Breathing with Vocalization: Some women find relief by vocalizing during contractions, such as humming, chanting, or moaning. Research suggests that vocalization can help release tension, increase relaxation, and reduce the perception of pain during labor.

  • Breathing with Movement: Combining breathing techniques with movement, such as swaying, rocking, or walking, can help manage pain and promote comfort during labor. Studies have shown that movement-based breathing techniques can lead to improved labor outcomes and maternal satisfaction.

These breathing techniques are often taught in childbirth education classes and practiced during labor to help women cope with the intensity of contractions and promote a positive birth experience. It's essential for expectant mothers to explore different techniques and find what works best for them during labor!

TAYLORED Positions

Different phases of labor require specific positions to optimize comfort and progression. These positions align with the natural flow of labor, facilitating the birthing process. See more on the National Library of Medicines website and Cochran Library.

Early Labor (Latent Phase):

  • Resting: Resting is paramount during the early stages of labor. It allows the mother's body to conserve energy and prepare for the intense work ahead. Finding a comfortable resting position, such as lying down on the side or reclining with supportive pillows, can help ease discomfort and promote relaxation. Hydration is also essential during this time to maintain optimal hydration levels, support circulation, and ensure the body's well-being.

  • Walking: Walking can help promote relaxation, encourage pelvic movement, and facilitate early labor progression. It also allows the mother to maintain an upright position, which can help alleviate discomfort and encourage the baby to descend into the pelvis.

  • Standing Leaning Forward: Leaning forward while standing can help relieve pressure on the lower back and pelvis. This position encourages the baby to move into an optimal position for birth and can help reduce discomfort during early labor.

  • Sitting on a Birth Ball: Sitting on a birth ball provides gentle support and allows for pelvic movement. It can help alleviate pressure on the lower back and pelvis while promoting relaxation and comfort during early labor.

Black pregnant woman on a birthing ball

Active Labor (Active Phase):

  • Hands and Knees: Getting on hands and knees can help relieve back pain and encourage optimal fetal positioning. This position allows gravity to assist in the descent of the baby and can help open the pelvis for a smoother birth.

  • Squatting: Squatting opens the pelvic outlet and encourages the baby to descend further into the birth canal. It can help facilitate cervical dilation and promote efficient contractions during active labor.

  • Supported Leaning: Leaning forward onto a support, such as a birthing ball or a partner, can help relieve pressure on the spine and pelvis. This position allows for relaxation between contractions and encourages the baby's descent during active labor.

Pregnant woman in labor leaning supporting herself

Transition Phase:

  • Side-Lying: Lying on one side can help promote relaxation and conserve energy during the intense contractions of the transition phase. This position allows for rest between contractions while still encouraging progress in labor.

  • Reclining with Elevated Hips: Reclining with the hips elevated, such as on a bed with pillows under the hips, can help open the pelvic inlet and encourage the baby's descent. This position provides comfort and support during the challenging transition phase.

Pregnant woman resting on couch

Pushing Phase (Second Stage):

  • Squatting or Semi-Squatting: Squatting or semi-squatting allows for effective pushing by utilizing gravity to assist in the descent of the baby. This position opens the pelvic outlet and encourages efficient contractions during the pushing phase.

  • Hands and Knees or All Fours: Getting on hands and knees or all fours can help widen the pelvic outlet and provide optimal positioning for pushing. This position also allows for flexibility and mobility during the pushing phase.

  • Upright Positions: Upright positions, such as standing, kneeling, or using a birthing stool, can facilitate effective pushing by utilizing gravity. These positions encourage the baby's descent and promote a smoother birth experience.

Encouraging expectant mothers to explore and practice these Taylored positions during labor can help optimize comfort, progression, and overall satisfaction with the birthing process. It's essential to discuss these options with a healthcare provider or doula and consider individual preferences and needs during labor!

Water Births

Research supports the calming and peaceful effects of water births, reducing stress and enhancing the birthing experience for both mother and baby. Water births offer a range of benefits for both mother and baby.

Pregnant woman doing a water birth

Immersion in warm water during labor provides natural pain relief, easing the intensity of contractions and promoting relaxation. This can lead to a reduction in the risk of tearing, as the warm water helps soften the perineum.

Additionally, water births allow for increased mobility and freedom of movement, enabling mothers to find comfortable positions easily. The calming environment created by water immersion reduces anxiety and promotes a sense of well-being during labor and delivery. For babies, being born in water provides a gentle transition from the womb to the outside world, fostering bonding and emotional connection. Furthermore, water births are associated with a reduced need for medical interventions, leading to a more natural and empowering birth experience overall. See more on water births on NIH’s website!

Honoring Your Body's Innate Strength

But here's the real secret, mama: it's all about going internal. Shutting out the noise of the world and listening to the wisdom of your body. Your body was made for this, and you have everything you need within you to bring your baby into this world with strength and grace!

And let's not forget about the power of your voice. Those primal sounds you make during labor? They're not just noise—they're your body's way of releasing tension and helping your baby descend. So don't be afraid to let go and trust in the process. See more on vocal toning here.

The Biggest Mistake: Focused on Material Things, Forgotten Support System

Trust me, I get it! The excitement of preparing for your baby's arrival can be overwhelming, and it's easy to get caught up in the shopping frenzy. But here's the thing: almost no parents have their support system ironed out before the baby comes. The Sisterhood Connection: Your Trusted Guide

When picking the perfect doula for you, it's not just about ticking off qualifications; it's about connecting with someone whose vibe resonates with your heart. Imagine the gentle voice of a soft-spoken, trustworthy friend, whispering words of encouragement and showering you with positive affirmations.

Now, let's dive into a scenario where it's just you and your partner, navigating the uncharted waters of parenthood. Perhaps you've spent your time, energy, and resources creating the most Instagrammable nursery, decking it out with all the suggested baby gear, and ensuring the perfect baby outfits. The excitement builds, and then the reality of childbirth hits. Suddenly, you find yourselves in the midst of labor, the contractions intensifying, and the fear begins to creep in.

In this moment, your partner, though well-intentioned, may not have experienced a live birth before, and the uncertainty of what's normal or expected sets in. The picture-perfect birth you envisioned goes up in smoke, and you're left feeling overwhelmed and doubting your capabilities as a mother and a woman. As your parasympathetic nervous system shifts to the sympathetic, the fight-or-flight response can hinder the birthing process.

Now, imagine having a doula in this scenario – a supportive, experienced guide who understands the intricacies of birth. Instead of succumbing to fear and doubt, you would feel a sense of empowerment, love, and strength. Your doula becomes a pillar of support, helping you navigate the unknown with confidence. She doesn't call the shots, but she ensures you feel seen, heard, and capable, empowering you to birth your baby with confidence and grace. It's about having someone on your team who believes in your strength and helps you bring forth the life you've nurtured within.

Let's explore the key factors in your search for the ideal doula:

Doula and mother to be hugging and smiling at home
  1. Short-Term Investment, Long-Term Success: Engaging a doula is an investment in your short-term and long-term well-being. The guidance and knowledge they provide contribute to building strong family foundations that will last a lifetime. With their support, you'll feel more confident, empowered, and ready to embrace the joys and challenges of parenthood.

  2. Embracing Mental Health: It's essential to recognize that the journey to motherhood encompasses a range of emotions. Studies reveal that having a doula decreases the likelihood of developing postpartum mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Choosing a doula who understands the importance of emotional well-being and can offer nurturing support is crucial.

  3. Nurturing Newborn Care: Your doula not only supports you during labor and birth but also teaches you the ins and outs of newborn care. With their tried and true methods and product recommendations, they equip you with the knowledge and confidence to care for your little one. It's like having a trusted mentor by your side, guiding you through those precious early days.

  4. Community Connections: Doulas offer more than just their expertise. They have extensive networks and can connect you to referrals for specialists within the community. From lactation consultants to occupational therapists, chiropractors, and therapists, the support system they provide extends beyond themselves, ensuring you receive the best care possible.

  5. Authentic Alignment: Above all, finding a doula who aligns with your vibe and views is paramount. Your doula should be your strongest advocate and respect your unique birth plan. To ensure a harmonious connection, ask questions during the selection process. Discuss your goals, fears, and dreams openly, allowing their responses to guide you toward a doula who feels like the perfect fit.

Keep in mind that certifications are valuable, but the most crucial factors are experience, knowledge, reliability, and respect for your beliefs! Choose a doula who supports your parenting and birthing choices, rather than imposing their views. Do they respect you/your beliefs? Will they support you in the way you want to parent/ birth? Or are they stuck in their ways and feel like they have the right to tell you how you should parent your baby? Make sure to ask all of these questions when choosing a doula for you!

Harmony of Vibes: Finding Your Perfect Doula Match

But how do you find someone who is a good fit to be part of your labor support team? Here are some additional tips to consider:

  1. Seek Recommendations: If you have a friend who has used a doula, ask her to share her story and introduce you to her doula. While each woman's birth experience is unique, hearing about their positive experiences can be a great starting point in finding the right doula for you.

  2. Consult Your Healthcare Provider: Reach out to your midwife or doctor for recommendations. Hospitals and birth centers often provide doula services or can provide referrals. Keep in mind that while they may have suggestions, the choice of a doula ultimately lies with you!

  3. Tap into Childbirth Education: Your childbirth educator may have insights into local doulas who have helped other women or may even work as a doula themselves. By building a relationship in class, you can get to know each other before your birth, creating a sense of familiarity and trust.

  4. Utilize Doula Organization Websites: Explore websites of organizations that train and certify doulas, such as DONA International. These sites often allow you to search for doulas by location, giving you a starting point to find professionals in your area.

  5. Conduct Interviews: Whenever possible, interview multiple doulas before making your decision. During these interviews, reflect on your desires and expectations for your doula. Consider how she will fit in with the rest of your labor support team and ask about her approach and role in supporting you during birth.

  6. Factors to Consider: Think about your preferred ways of dealing with challenges and how you like to be supported. Do you enjoy massages or prefer conversations as a distraction? Discuss your preferences with the doula and see if they align. Additionally, consider how your partner wants to be involved and ask the doula how she sees her role in supporting you during birth.

Another factor to consider is the doula’s medical expertise! As a BSN, RN with extensive medical knowledge, I bring invaluable insights, particularly for hospital births. 98% of moms in the US choose to bring their sweet baby’s Earthside within a hospital setting. The hospital setting can be daunting, and a doula with medical expertise simplifies complex information, ensures an understanding of patient rights, and aids in healing after a C-section or even before, explaining/prepping the family for what to expect for a C-section the procedure & the healing process.

Some doulas also specialize in postpartum nourishment, providing meal plans during the contract. Does your doula have a background or specialization that aligns with your needs?

Dear Mama, as you navigate this awe-inspiring journey, trust your instincts and surround yourself with a doula who will support you wholeheartedly! Imagine their presence as that of your cherished older sister, radiating love, gentle strength, and unwavering support.

You've got this, mama! Trust in your ability to choose a doula who will be your guiding light on this remarkable adventure of motherhood.

With love, Your trusted North County San Diego Doula.

Join me on this exploration as we navigate the essential aspects of birth and postpartum support, creating a foundation for an empowered and cherished motherhood experience.

1. Birth Questions:

  • Feel into your birth vision: Ask, "Are there any births you won't support?" Find a doula who resonates with your unique journey, embracing your desires and choices. Whether that’s an at-home birth or a hospital birth!

  • Embrace the presence that matters: "When do you come to be with us when labor starts?" (some doulas won’t show up until 6 cm dilated). Ensure your doula is there for you from the very beginning, offering unwavering support if that's your goal! On average a first time birth can be anywhere from 12 to 20 hours- if it is your goal to have a Doula with you the entire time ask what their protocol is for a longer birth. Do they work as a team? Call in a back up? Etc.

  • Hands-on care, heart-centered support: "Do you offer hands-on support during labor?" Seek a doula whose touch brings comfort and reassurance, enhancing your birthing experience.

  • Reliability and backup plans: Make sure to ask, "Do you have a backup?" and "How many families do you work with each month?" (the higher the number the more of a chance you may get a back up). Understanding their availability ensures you'll have the support you need.

  • Continuity and follow-up: "Do you stay after the baby is born?" and "Do you offer any follow-up appointments?" Find a doula committed to your postpartum well-being.

2. Postpartum Questions:

  • Taylored support for your unique journey: "What services do you offer?" Seek a doula whose support extends beyond birth, offering services like baby laundry, light tidying, and infant care.

  • Reliability and expertise: Ask them, "Are you reliable?" Ensure your doula is a steadfast presence, someone you can trust with the intricate dance of early motherhood. Additionally, don't hesitate to inquire about testimonials from past clients. Asking to see testimonials can provide valuable insight into the doula's track record and the experiences of those they've supported. This can further aid in your decision-making process, ensuring you find the perfect match for your journey into motherhood. Contact me for more information on past testimonials.

  • Knowledge and assistance: "Can you help with sleep training?" and "Do you know infant CPR?" “Which baby carrier is best for me?” Find a doula equipped with knowledge to ease your transition into motherhood.

  • TaylorMade Doula Tip: It's important to note that some doulas specialize solely in birth support, while others focus exclusively on postpartum care. It's rare to find a doula who covers both areas comprehensively. Therefore, it's crucial to conduct thorough research to determine which type of doula best aligns with your needs and preferences. Whether you're seeking support during childbirth, assistance in the postpartum period, or desiring the whole package with the same supportive soul -finding the right doula for you can greatly enhance your birthing and parenting experience!

These questions ensure you're not just choosing a doula but inviting a trusted ally into your journey. The doula's reliability and expertise in postpartum care are equally crucial!

United States Maternity Realities: Navigating C-Section Rates and Maternal-Infant Mortality

Firstly, let's address the current reality of birth in the United States. The rates of C-sections  in our hospitals far exceed those of other well-off countries. While it should be around 8-15%, our rates hover at 30-33%. Maternal-infant mortality rates, especially among the BIPOC population, are alarmingly high. This knowledge raises concerns about the quality of care and the need for a shift in our approach to childbirth.

Choosing Empowerment: The Doula Difference in Your Birth Experience

Choosing to invest in a doula increases the likelihood of having a natural birth, creating an intimate and loving experience. Birth can either be a moment of empowerment or a terrifying situation where you may feel powerless, weak, unprepared, unseen, unheard, disrespected, and uncared for. In a hospital setting, without a doula or someone to advocate for you, you may find yourself arguing for your wishes while simultaneously trying to focus on the labor process. This vulnerability increases the chances of unnecessary interventions. A doula steps in to alleviate this burden, allowing you to focus on what truly matters – the birth of your precious baby.

Medication Minimized: Trusting Your Body's Natural Birth Journey

By working alongside a doula, you decrease the need for excessive medication. You begin to realize the innate power within you. Whether you hold religious beliefs or not, there is a universal belief that we are all created with the tools needed to bring new life into the world. With a doula by your side, you will experience just how powerful you are, learning to trust your body and your connection to something greater.

One of the most profound benefits of having a doula is the overwhelmingly positive birth experiences reported by mothers. With a doula, you feel empowered, in charge, seen, heard, supported, respected, cared for, safe, and loved. These feelings create the foundation for a magical start to motherhood.

A Mother is Born: Nurturing the Transition into Postpartum

But the support doesn't end there. As your baby enters the world, a mother is born. It's a time of immense physical and emotional changes. Your body, which has been constantly evolving for the past 9-10 months, doesn't bounce back to its pre-pregnancy state overnight. This can be tough for many women, affecting body image and hormonal balance. Furthermore, new moms and parents can easily feel isolated as they adjust to their new roles.

Having a doula means having someone by your side who understands these challenges and is there to hold you and care for you, just like a newborn. You deserve to be nurtured so you can embrace this new chapter with confidence. Sleep deprivation is a very real hurdle in the early weeks, and having extra help from a trusted doula allows you to reset and recharge. This, in turn, enables you to be the best parent you can be – taking a rejuvenating shower, grabbing a much-needed nap, or simply spending quality time with your partner.

Guardians of Mental Health: Doula Support and Postpartum Well-being

Moreover, investing in a doula significantly decreases the chance of developing postpartum mental health issues such as depression or anxiety. A doula provides guidance and support while teaching you tried and true methods of caring for your newborn. We also connect you to a network of specialists within our community – lactation consultants, occupational therapists, chiropractors, therapists, and more.

Short-Term Investment, Lifelong Impact: Building a Strong Family Foundation

I encourage you to explore some reputable medical resources that provide valuable insights into pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. As well as the benefits of a San Diego Doula.
